Musical based on Irish indie film to open on Broadway
The stage adaptation of a hit coming-of-age Irish film is moving to Broadway.
Sing Street opened last month Off-Broadway in New York and following an extended run at the New York Theatre Workshop, it will transfer to the Lyceum Theatre.
Performances on Broadway will begin on March 26 and opens on April 19.
Based on John Carney’s 2016 indie film, it is set in Dublin in the 1980s and focuses on a group of teens who form a band to impress a girl.
Irish Tony Award winners Enda Walsh and Bob Crowley are involved with the book and the scenic and costume design respectively.
The musical features a New Wave score from Carney and Gary Clark and choreography by Sonya Tayeh.
It is directed by Tony winner Rebecca Taichman.
Sing Street was released in cinemas in 2016 and had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It was an international co-production between producers from Ireland, the US and the UK and grossed $13 million worldwide.
The film received positive reviews and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
