Govt considers plan to reward parents returning to work

Families who leave the welfare system to go back to work could be rewarded in next month's budget.

The Government is looking at a plan to allow a parent take up a low-paid job and keep a welfare payment worth up to €30 per child a week.

Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has told the Irish Times that she is "very confident" about the proposal.

Details of the scheme have emerged as the Ministers for Finance and Public Expenditure face into the first meetings with Cabinet colleagues about their departments' budget plans.
