An American soldier was killed in an attack on his convoy in Baghdad, the US military said today.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, at least 19 troops were injured when mortars were fired at a US forward operating base near Balad, said Cpl Todd Pruden.

Several explosions rocked the base 55 miles north of the capital in the attack last night, Pruden said.

The injured were evacuated to a military hospital. Their condition was not immediately known.

The convoy attack that killed the soldier occurred at about 8.30pm yesterday in eastern Baghdad.

The soldier was inside a Bradley fighting vehicle when he was shot. He was evacuated to a military hospital, but died later, Pruden said.

His name was not immediately available.

US troops have come under near-daily attack from an increasingly bold uprising.

At least 27 US troops have been killed in hostile fire since major combat was officially declared over on May 1.
