Centre for torture victims reports five-fold increase in clients

The Centre for the Care of Survivors of Torture has reported a five-fold increase in the number of torture victims being cared for in Ireland since the start of last year.

The Centre for the Care of Survivors of Torture has reported a five-fold increase in the number of torture victims being cared for in Ireland since the start of last year.

The centre said its client list has risen from 84 at the beginning of 2002 to 590 at present.

It said it was treating torture victims from more than 40 countries, primarily in Africa, the Middle East and eastern Europe.

The centre said between 10% and 35% of all asylum seekers in Ireland have experienced torture or other forms of serious violence in their home countries.
