The number of people being sent to jail for failing to pay small court fines has increased by 25% in just two years.

According to figures obtained by the Sunday Independent newspaper, the statistics show a significant rise in the numbers of people who are being locked behind bars because they cannot afford to pay the charge.

The Irish Prison Service says it costs an average of €65,000 per year to keep a person behind bars.

Court fines are imposed for a number of infringements including public order and driving offences, assault and causing damage to property.
