An Australian dog managed to survive for a month locked inside a house after his owner died by drinking toilet water.

Basil drank the water to keep himself hydrated after his owner passed away from a longstanding illness and he then got himself stuck in the bathroom, where he was eventually discovered by police.

Neighbour Colin Peterson explained: "He would have had food for a while because there was a big bag inside and he eventually found out that the toilet was the best place to go for water.

"But he’s a biggish dog and he’s tried to turn around in the toilet and what he’s done is pushed the door shut and that’s where they found him. I think it’s just marvellous that he’s survived."

Despite managing to drink during his traumatic time, Basil immediately drank two five-litre water containers after he was rescued.
