Police said three people are now confirmed dead after a four-carriage train came off the rails in Hertfordshire outside London today.

One of the carriages smashed into a platform and ended up jammed under the canopy.

Casualties were given emergency first aid on the platform as fire fighters battled to free trapped passengers.

The other three carriages crashed into a bridge, raining debris down onto traffic passing through the town centre below.

A nearby Sainsbury’s supermarket was turned into an emergency first aid post as ambulances from across the region were sent to the scene.
