Fine Gael in call for referendum on donations

Fine Gael's spokesman on social and community affairs, Brian Hayes, said the government should put the issue of political funding to the people in the shape of a referendum.

Fine Gael's spokesman on social and community affairs, Brian Hayes, said the government should put the issue of political funding to the people in the shape of a referendum.

He said the link between big business and politics must be broken and a ban on corporate funding of politics would have the support of the people in any referendum.

Deputy Hayes said he believed, however, the government did not have the stomach to face the people on this issue.
