Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed he is “likely” to pick Wayne Rooney for England’s friendly in South Africa later this month despite Everton boss David Moyes’ objections.

Moyes is keen to ensure Rooney, still only 17, is not over-worked but England coach Eriksson confirmed he expects to call up the striker for the South Africa trip.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It is likely. He (Moyes) has a diamond in his hand and he of course tries to protect it. We will sort that out, I will talk to him later.”

Eriksson admitted he missed life as a club manager, but insisted he had no immediate desire to return to domestic football.

Asked if he would one day return to club management, he said: “I hope so but I don’t mean by that that I’m not happy in the job I have.

“The only little thing I miss is the daily contact with the training ground, the football players.

“It is too much paper and too little football but the job is like that so I shouldn’t complain.”
