A post mortem examination is to be carried out on a three-month-old baby girl who died after her father was charged with causing her grievous bodily harm in the North.

Caragh Walsh, of Glasvey Drive in Twinbrook in West Belfast, was brought to the city’s Royal Victoria Hospital on Wednesday night and remained in a critical condition. Last night police announced her death.

Christopher O’Neill, her 23-year-old father, appeared before a judge in Craigavon Magistrates’ Court in Co Armagh yesterday.

A district judge permitted the identities of father and daughter to be released after a reporting restriction was lifted during a bail hearing this morning.

Parish priest Fr Brian McCann from St Luke's Catholic church in Twinbrook said the entire community was rallying around the infant's family.

“It is very tragic, we are just trying to console them as best we can,” he said.

“They are devastated and obviously it would be very difficult to come to terms with this but they are supporting one another and the community is very supportive and people are praying for them.

“They are very appreciative of all the help that they have received from the community.”

A PSNI spokesman said detectives from Serious Crime Branch will be consulting with the Public Prosecution Service.
