Cowen 'more genuine in commitment to illegal Irish'

The Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform in the US says it believes Brian Cowen is more genuine in his commitment to helping illegal Irish immigrants than his predecessor Bertie Ahern was.

The Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform in the US says it believes Brian Cowen is more genuine in his commitment to helping illegal Irish immigrants than his predecessor Bertie Ahern was.

The lobby group says it accepts the Taoiseach's comments yesterday that there is no political appetite in the US to fix the immigration problem at the moment.

However, it says Washington will deliver if Ireland keeps asking.

Irish politicians have been campaigning for a special amnesty for illegal Irish immigrants following the failure of the US Congress to agree on a normalisation process for the millions of undocumented migrants in the States.

Ciaran Staunton from the Irish Lobby for Immigrant Reform says the group was left "hanging in the wind" by Bertie Ahern, but Mr Cowen understands the issues much better.
