The Australian government is considering lifting a decade-old ban on spending foreign aid on abortion advice in developing countries.
Bob McMullan, Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance, said today that Australia and the United States are the only two countries in the world to place restrictions on foreign aid spending on abortion services and advice.
He said Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has asked a committee of government colleagues to report on whether the abortion ban should be lifted.
Senior opposition Senator Ron Boswell warns that the government faces a backlash from Christian groups if it changes the policy that has existed for 12 years.
