US authorities released a batch of Iraqi prisoners from the notorious Abu Ghraib detention centre today, bringing the total number set free in the last two months to over 2,000.
US Humvees escorted at least three buses out of the grim facility west of Baghdad.
The release was the seventh in seven weeks, said Lieut Colonel Tim Ryan, commander of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment.
“The prisoners were either released after serving their time or they were tried and found to have insufficient evidence and released,” Ryan said.
The prison has been the centre of a scandal over allegations that American prison guards abused Iraqi detainees.
US authorities have said they will release or transfer hundreds of prisoners to Iraqi control after the transfer of sovereignty on June 30.
