More airlines are cancelling or diverting flights from Bristol International Airport today following runway concerns.

Nine operators have decided not to use the airport today because of worries about the ability of planes to brake in wet weather after resurfacing work on the runway.

These airlines are easyJet, BA Connect, XL, Thomsonfly, Thomas Cook, Balkan Airlines, First Choice, Air Malta and SN Brussels.

The airport said they expected a total of 98 flights to be diverted to other airports today and 28 flights to be cancelled.

Tony Hallwood, the airport’s Aviation Development Director, said: “Over the past 24 hours we have been working with our airline partners to find an acceptable way forward.

“We wish to reassure passengers that every effort is being made to ensure to that a normal service is resumed at Bristol International as soon as possible.

“The safety of our passengers is, as always, of paramount concern.”

Problems began after the airport announced £17m (€25.2m) runway resurfacing plans last October, with work scheduled to last for five months.

All passengers are advised to contact their airlines and tour operators directly for individual details regarding their flights today or to check departure information online at www.bristolairport.co.uk.
