Shots fired at India's parliament after explosion

Police and paramilitary forces in New Delhi have fired shots at the gates to the Indian Parliament after an explosion.

Police and paramilitary forces in New Delhi have fired shots at the gates to the Indian Parliament after an explosion.

Hundreds of rounds have been fired as police hid behind cars and walls and the stand-off was broadcast on most television stations.

Parliament had been adjourned, but most Cabinet members and politicians were still inside when the shooting started.

The office of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee says he is safe and monitoring the situation from an undisclosed location.

Mr Vajpayee had been in the Parliament complex at the time and was leaving when the violence broke out.

All the politicians are safe and there has been no damage to the sprawling red sandstone Parliament building.

Police appealed for everyone to take cover as the shooting continued for more than 20 minutes.

India's law minister says most attackers have been killed.

A television cameraman for Star News said he saw six men in civilian clothes open fire at Gate No. 12, used by members of the upper house, the Rajya Sabha.

Defense Minister George Fernandes said that army troops had joined New Delhi police at the scene.
