Garvaghy residents seek tightening of parades law

The Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition is proposing a tightening-up of the law governing Orange parades.

The Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition is proposing a tightening-up of the law governing Orange parades.

The group also accuses the British Government of turning parades into a political football.

The Parades Commission was set up to remove the contentious issue from political influence, says the coalition, but by giving in to unionist pressure and setting up a review of its work, the British Government has linked parades to other issues like policing and the vagaries of politics.

On the review itself, it says the Parades Commission should impose fines on those who breach its rulings.

It says that traditional parades must take into account the contemporary demographic make-up of the communities through which they march, and the Good Friday Agreement promise of freedom from sectarian harassment must be upheld.
