The Government is defending the Taoiseach’s speech in South Africa yesterday against Opposition claims of hypocrisy.

Fine Gael says Bertie Ahern’s call for nations to meet their overseas aid targets was a public relations stunt, given recent cuts in Ireland’s budget.

Government Minister Dermot Ahern insists the Taoiseach is innocent of the claim.

"We will be increasing the overseas development aid by over €100m on top of a dramatic increase last year so the Taoiseach is absolutely correct.

"I am delighted to hear that he has copper-fastened and confirmed his commitment that by 2007 this country will reach the magic figure of 0.7%, which is a huge amount."

He added: "America doesn't even reach 0.1%."
