About 500 workers at a cooker factory faced an uncertain future today after owner Electrolux announced an investigation into the site’s viability.
The Swedish appliances firm said falling prices and stronger global competition had “significantly undermined” the profitability of the factory at Spennymoor, County Durham.
It will now hold an investigation into the future viability of the site, which manufactures free-standing and built-in cookers for the UK and Irish markets. It has about 500 staff.
Electrolux said: “Imports from countries with lower cost levels have intensified over the last few years, therefore resulting in lower prices.”
The company, which employs more than 56,000 people worldwide, said it hoped to conclude its investigation by the end of the year.
