Legal costs for institution abuse redress scheme over €250m

Over €250m will be paid out to lawyers representing people who were sexually and physically abused in religious institutions.

Over €250m will be paid out to lawyers representing people who were sexually and physically abused in religious institutions.

Under the compensation scheme set up, lawyers fees account for nearly 20% of the overall cost.

The total cost of the redress scheme is now put at around €1.3bn.

Over €700m has already been paid out, including almost €100m in legal costs.

The work of the board set up to hear cases and award compensation will not be completed until 2010.
