Two held following Galway cocaine seizure

A man and a woman were arrested today after a joint Garda and Customs sting on drugs gangs.

Seven kilos of cocaine was recovered when a car was stopped on the outskirts of Gort, Co Galway.

The intelligence-led operation was part of investigations into organised crime gangs in Galway and Limerick.

Customs officials said the car was pulled over after a package suspected of containing drugs was tracked from the United States and through Shannon Airport.

The cocaine was believed to have a street value of about €500,000 and was taken away for forensic tests on purity.

The arrested couple, a man aged 39 and a woman aged 24, were detained when the car was stopped by customs officers and the Garda National Drugs Unit.

They were being held under section two of the Criminal Justice Act 1996 at Galway Garda Station.
