The Brit Awards kicked off tonight with The Darkness and Justin Timberlake taking the early spoils.

The British glam-rockers and the American superstar picked up the first two gongs at the glitzy showbiz ceremony in London.

The Darkness beat off Busted, the Coral, Radiohead and the Sugababes to win Best British Group while Timberlake won his first Brit, taking the best international male accolade.

The Darkness frontman, Justin Hawkins, told the audience: “This is a real privilege, a tremendous honour and a great achievement … and I have to say, we probably are the best British group.”

The awards, hosted by Cat Deely at Earls Court in west London, opened with the Black Eyed Peas performing their hit Shut Up.

The next performance was from Busted with a cover of Teenage Kicks.
