About 90 anti-capitalist protesters were detained in central Moscow today when they tried to break through police barricades.
Activists from communist youth groups and the National Bolshevik Party rallied in Moscow’s Triumfalnaya Square, waving red flags and chanting “Down with the bourgeoisie” and anti-government slogans.
Police said about 500 people took part and 90 were detained.
The square was blocked off by hundreds of police, many in riot gear.
A clash broke out when a group of protesters tried to break through the police line by throwing home-made smoke bombs.
Some protesters used their flags as weapons, and Russian television showed one group of young men picking up a metal barrier and throwing it at police.
