Emergency workers in southern Italy are removing the wreckage of a tour bus which plunged off a highway killing at least 38 people.

Emergency workers in southern Italy are removing the wreckage of a tour bus which plunged off a highway killing at least 38 people.

Local prosecutors have launched an investigation into possible manslaughter after the accident close to the town of Avellino near Naples.

The vehicle, carrying about 50 people including children, was traveling at high speed when it crashed on a busy dual carriageway between Naples and Bari in an area Italian media described as an accident black spot.

The passengers were returning from a pilgrimage to the birthplace of Padre Pio.

Rescuers have had to use electric saws to cut through the twisted metal to look for survivors.
