Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
Director: Rawson Marshall
Cast: Vince Vaughan, Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Christina Taylor, Rip Torn
Cert: 12.
Doubtless we’ll have Dodgeball in the next Olympics … what sort of game it thinks it is. Well, OK, it’s one where you, er, dodge a ball.
The story concerns the attempts of Stiller to grab Vaughn’s small fitness emporium. To see him off the good guys require $50,000 so it’s lucky for them that an up-coming Dodgeball tournament is offering prize money of $50,000.
Of course, none of our heroes have ever played the game before so the arrival of the old and beat-up pro, Torn - who has one of those memorable Hollywood names, like Nosmo King (think about it) - soon has the lads ready for action.
It’s the conventional theme of battling against impossible odds, but here it’s done with a lack of warmth.
We really couldn’t care less about the characters succeeding. If there is any charm to be seen it comes from Vaughn, but he can’t provide everything the film cries out for.
