The boy who died after falling into a river in Cork over the weekend has been named as James Casey Butler from the Tir Cluain estate in Midleton.

The seven-year-old was airlifted from Cork University Hospital to Our Lady's Hospital Crumlin after a neighbour pulled him from the water on Saturday evening.

He remained in Intensive Care there before he lost his fight for life at around 8.30pm yesterday evening.

The tragic incident happened at the Owenacurra river which runs alongside the boy's home in Co. Cork.

The alarm was raised just before 7pm on Saturday evening by one of the boy's friends who was playing with him near the river.

His neighbour drove to the river and pulled the boy from the water.
