Senior Church figures named in the Murphy report are defying calls for their resignations.

Among them, the Bishop of Limerick Dr Donal Murray - a former auxilary Bishop in Dublin - denies ever covering up child sex abuse in the Dublin diocese.

Assistant Garda Commissioner John O’Mahoney is to lead an examination of the Murphy report to determine if charges should be brought against child abusers or those involved in covering up the actions of paedophile priests for 30 years.

Meanwhile, it is reported that 80 files are to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to complaints made to gardaí following the Ryan report into abuse in institutions run by religious orders.
