Judge shot dead at Milan courthouse

A man has opened fire in Milan’s courthouse, killing a bankruptcy judge and reportedly hitting at least one other person, Italy’s ANSA news agency said.

ANSA quoted the president of the appeals court, Giovanni Canzio, as identifying the killed judge as Fernando Ciampi.

Sky TG24 reported that two people were killed, and that the gunman was barricaded in an upper-floor room.

The building was being evacuated and women were seen leaving first. Men left later, after having their identification checked.

Police were posted at all exits.

ANSA and other news outlets said the man suspected of the shooting was in the courthouse for a bankruptcy proceeding.

It was unclear how the gunman gained entrance as visitors to the building have to pass through metal detectors.
