Insurance report doesn't go far enough, says FG

Fine Gael's Denis Naughten TD has welcomed the publication of the Motor Insurance Advisory Board Report (MIAB) but claims that it fails to go far enough to address the issue of insurance especially for young drivers.

Fine Gael's Denis Naughten TD has welcomed the publication of the Motor Insurance Advisory Board Report (MIAB) but claims that it fails to go far enough to address the issue of insurance especially for young drivers.

"While the thrust of the Report is positive, it fails to address the claims record of young drivers and the need to introduce a structural driving programme which would be incentivised by the insurance industry, as proposed by Fine Gael over 18 months ago.

"The mechanism proposed for the review of the high cost of insurance facing young drivers proposed by the MIAB is cumbersome and will take at least until 2005 before any action will be taken in this area.

"This is totally unacceptable to young people who have been facing astronomical prices for insurance for years", concluded Denis Naughten.
