Gardaí question 113 following cannabis clampdown

Gardaí are continuing to question 113 people in connection with a major crackdown on organised crime and cannabis growhouses.

They have all been detained over the past 24 hours as the second phase of Operation Wireless continues.

Gardaí revealed last night that €3.5m worth of cannabis had been seized in more than 230 searches across the country.

Speaking before the Oireachtas Justice Committee, the Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan said there is a trend towards the use of growhouses because of the quick turnaround they offer: "Unless we catch up with these locations, there is a conveyor belt of money available to organised crime groups.

"Quite an amount of eastern Europeans are engaged in this activity but it's certainly the case that some of our indigenous crime groups and individuals within them are very much involved also."
