Scotland international Gregor Townsend is set for an anxious wait on his fitness after suffering a knee injury in training on Tuesday.

The Borders stand-off twisted his knee and Scotland team medical staff are looking for a specialist opinion.

But team doctor James Robson is confident Townsend will be available for the tournament in Australia next month.

He said: “Given the timescale we are working to leading up to the Rugby World Cup, it is best to have Gregor’s knee looked at by the specialist surgeon to make sure any irritation is accurately diagnosed and rectified if required.

“If any surgical work is needed on the injury, it is expected that he should be back playing and taking part in full training within 10 to 14 days and barring any complication would be fully available for World Cup duties.”
