The Department of Finance has reportedly begun work to draft new legislation implementing Fianna Fáil's election proposals on stamp duty.

The Department of Finance has reportedly begun work to draft new legislation implementing Fianna Fáil's election proposals on stamp duty.

Reports this morning say Minister for Finance Brian Cowen has ordered officials in the department to begin preparing to implement the proposals as soon as the next Dáil is convened.

Fianna Fáil has promised to abolish stamp duty for first-time buyers and to backdate the measure to April 30.

This morning's reports say Mr Cowen's move to begin drafting new legislation may be an indication of the tough stance that Fianna Fáil plans to take on the matter with potential coalition partners.
