Ireland’s largest traditional music summer school opens today in Co Clare.

The Willie Clancy event has been held every year in Miltown Malbay since 1973 in memory of the famous local piper of the same name.

Almost 1,000 students from every part of the world will attend daily classes taught by experts in Irish music and dance.

The nine-day programme includes lectures, recitals, dances and exhibitions.

Special modules this year will focus on harmonica music, the Scots Gaelic language and old-style step dancing.

A musical tribute will be performed at Clancy’s grave in Ballard Cemetery during the event.
