More than 20 prisoners have failed to return to their cells after being granted compassionate leave for Christmas.

More than 20 prisoners have failed to return to their cells after being granted compassionate leave for Christmas.

A total of 280 inmates were freed temporarily for the festive season, but the prison authorities said 22 had failed to return by Monday night's deadline, although many are likely to report back in the coming days.

The inmates granted temporary release are mostly those who have been jailed for relatively minor offences or who were near the ends of their sentences.
