The 19-year-old daughter of President George W Bush was today fined 600 dollars (£430) and her driver’s license suspended for 30 days on charges of underage drinking and trying to use someone else’s identity to buy alcohol.

Jenna Bush, a student at the University of Texas, did not attend the two court hearings which covered two separate incidents.

Here defence lawyer Bill Allison told the hearings in Austin, Texas, that Jenna was out of town.

He entered a no-contest (guilty) plea to a charge that Bush tried to use someone else’s identification to buy alcohol at a popular Mexican restaurant on May 29.

Municipal Judge Karrie Key ordered Bush to pay 100 dollars (£70) in court fees, perform 36 hours of community service and attend a session where victims of alcohol-related crimes discuss their experiences.

If she completes the requirements and stays out of trouble for three months, the charge will be dismissed.

The underage drinking charge, which stems from an incident in April, will go on her record as a conviction because of the restaurant violation.

Bush’s no-contest plea had been deferred by Community Court Judge Elisabeth Earle, who found her guilty, fined her 500 dollars (£360) and suspended her licence.

Jenna’s twin sister, Barbara, a Yale University student, pleaded guilty last month to underage possession of alcohol stemming from the visit to the Mexican restaurant.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer declined to comment on Friday’s case, saying it was ‘‘a family matter, not a Government matter, and it’s not an issue the White House is going to get into’’.

He was speaking from Kennebunkport, Maine, where the family is on holiday.
