Aldi and Lidl continue strong growth

Aldi and Lidl have both continued to grow their share in the Irish retail market, according to new figures released today.

The latest Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland figures show that Aldi and Lidl maintained their impressive double digit growth at 21.6% and 13.2% respectively for the 12 weeks ending May 25.

Aldi's record market share of 8% is held from last month, while Lidl reached a new record high of 7.9%.

Among the large retailers, Dunnes was the only one of the top three to grow its sales this period, by 0.7%.

Some 30% of Dunnes' in-store sales now sold on a “round euro” deal - up from just over 20% a year ago. The retailer now enjoys a 21.4% market share.

SuperValu's sales remain in line with last year, with a slight dip in market share from 25.2% to 24.8%. It gained 32,000 additional shoppers, a seventh consecutive month of footfall growth.

Tesco added 12,000 customers, and remains top of the market share chart on 26.3%.

An increase in the cost of food and drink helped push price inflation to 2.6%, a record for 2014.
