Syria will withdraw its troops from Lebanon in line with a 1989 Arab-brokered agreement, the Foreign Ministry said today.

“The important withdrawals have already been carried out and what will be carried out later will be in agreement with Lebanon based on the Taif Accord,” said a statement issued in Paris.

The announcement, though not breaking new ground in its long-standing policy, was the first government statement since the international uproar against Damascus over the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Syria has 15,000 troops in Lebanon and is the main power broker there.
