The Teachers’ Union of Ireland has criticised Education Minister Noel Dempsey’s decision to introduce a schools' league table.

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland has criticised Education Minister Noel Dempsey’s decision to introduce a schools' league table.

The TUI said the decision was “bizarre”, considering that then Education Minister Micheál Martin categorically outlawed the publication of such tables in 1998.

Jim Dorney, the union’s general secretary, said: “What we can’t understand is, if it wasn't right to do it five years ago, what has changed in the interim to make it acceptable now?”
