Bayern rue Kahn mistake while AC and Sparta draw

A rare error from Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn saw Roberto Carlos score a long-range free-kick to earn a 1-1 draw for Real Madrid in their Champions League first knock-out round first leg in Germany.

Leading through Dutchman Roy Makaay’s 75th-minute close-range effort, Munich were left stunned by Kahn’s clanger.

The Brazilian left-back’s 35-yard free-kick was not his most venomous but the Germany goalkeeper appeared to dive past the shot and as he tried to claw it back into his body he succeeded only in pulling it under his arm and it crept over the line.

Defending champions AC Milan were held to a goalless draw away to Sparta Prague and remain favourites to progress in a fortnight’s time.

Fernando Morientes’ goal 21 minutes from time gave Monaco a crucial away goal in the 2-1 defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow.

Marat Izmailov had given the home side the lead in the 32nd minute before Vladimir Maminov’s goal just before the hour appeared to have put the Russians in control in the first leg.
