Prison officers slam Justice Minister

The Prison Officers Association says the announcement of the imminent closure of Mountjoy Prison is evidence of further provocation on the part of the Minister for Justice.

The Prison Officers Association says the announcement of the imminent closure of Mountjoy Prison is evidence of further provocation on the part of the Minister for Justice.

It says prison staff are furious they were not consulted in relation to this, given the closure of four other prisons around the country of late.

The association's spokesperson Nigel Mallen was referring to the details outlined in the new Prison Bill published yesterday indicating the prison would be replaced.

He says members are confused by this latest announcement
