An inmate from Limerick Prison is on the run after escaping from custody while being treated in hospital yesterday.

Michael Desmond was on remand at the jail and was due to face burglary charges at Limerick District Court later this month.

The 26 year-old, from St Mary's Park, was involved in an altercation in the exercise yard on Tuesday and was hospitalised with a head injury.

He was kept in St John's Hospital overnight on Tuesday, but managed to push his way past prison officers after being escorted to the toilet

The Gardai have been notified, but they say they do not consider Mr Desmond to be dangerous.

The governor of Limerick Prison is conducting an investigation into the incident.
