Green party leader Trevor Sargent has today called for a radical overhaul of the electoral system following newspaper revelations that up to 800,000 polling cards were posted in the last election that should never have been issued.

Today’s report claimed the electoral register is grossly inaccurate and seriously flawed.

“There is no doubt that there is a huge problem in relation to the accuracy, or indeed the inaccuracy of the electoral register,” said Mr Sergeant.

“It is bringing the whole democratic process into disrepute.

“But people have to grasp the nettle here and check on the register because if people are showing a lack of interest in politics, the government will abuse that lack of interest and essentially abuse power.”
