It is reported that the Government is set to ban over 20,000 donors from giving blood in an attempt to reduce the risk of transmitting CJD - the human form of mad cow disease.
Health Minister Micheal Martin met members of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service today to discuss the matter.
The ban will cover any Irish person who spent more than six months in Britain during the peak of the BSE crisis from 1980 to 1999.
