Jill Meagher killer had already raped 21 times before

The man who raped and murdered Irish woman Jill Meagher in Australia was on parole for other rapes at the time.

A plea hearing this morning has heard the rape of the journalist from Drogheda last year in Melbourne was Adrian Ernest Bayley's 22nd.

Bayley has pleaded guilty to raping and murdering the 29-year-old and will be sentenced next Wednesday, June 19.

Lisa Macsimovicis, a reporter with ABC TV News in Melbourne where Jill worked, said: "He served a total of 11 years jail in Victoria on several counts of rape, of threats to kill and of attempted rape.

"In fact, the rape of Jill Meagher was his 22nd rape in total".

"He was on parole… having been released from prison after serving eight years of an 11-year prison term - and he was on parole at the time of raping Jill Meagher."

In a victim impact statement read at Bayley's plea hearing in the Supreme Court of Victoria, Jill's husband Tom said he was constantly haunted by visions of what happened to his wife.

Jill's father George McKeon also spoke in court today.

"It was a very emotional piece," said Macsimovicis. "For several minutes he explained how so frequently he would be reminded of his daughter and what his daughter will never have in her life.

"He lives across from a park where he says he sees daily young mothers and their babies and it just haunts him that his daughter will never have that opportunity."
