A major American or British supermarket chain may be set to buy out the Superquinn group of 19 stores throughout Ireland, according to reports.
Superquinn has traditionally stated that it is not for sale, but the new owner of Safeway in Britain is reportedly in the process of making a bid to add to its outlets of 12 stores in the north.
A report by a London based consultancy firm has indicated that five groups are currently engaged in a battle to take control of the sector in Britain.
Superquinn has rejected claims that it is suffering from a falling share of the Irish market.
