Large groups of taxi drivers are expected to congregate at ranks across the country today in a move to highlight their anger at the amount of licences being issued in the industry.

Drivers are being urged to gather at taxi ranks between 9am and 1pm to show the large volume of vehicles currently vying for fares in many parts of the country.

They say deregulation has led to a surplus of taxis and has created a situation where many drivers find it tough to earn a living.

Taxi unions say the number of registered taxis has increased from 3,900 to more than 20,000 since the industry was liberalised in 2000.
