Davenport tested, but misery for Martinez

Defending women's champion Lindsay Davenport took three sets to overcome German qualifier Greta Arn in the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Defending women's champion Lindsay Davenport took three sets to overcome German qualifier Greta Arn in the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

There was misery for former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, who became the first big name to drop out of the women's singles.

Davenport dispatched Arn with gusto in the final set, but the 6-2 4-6 6-2 scoreline does reflect what was at times a major test for the 1996 Olympic Champion.

It was a contrasting emotion for fifth seed Martinez, who suffered a shock 5-7 6-3 8-6 defeat at the hands of 24-year-old Swiss starlet Emmanuelle Gagliardi, ranked 93 in the world.

The result means the Spaniard could well suffer a rare drop out of the top six in the world rankings.

Sandrine Testud was well on the way to victory over Chinese competitor Yi Jing-Qian, but had the victory wrapped up early when the qualifier retired hurt deep in the second set.

The French No 14 seed had been leading 6-4 5-2.

Fourth seed Monica Seles was also an easy round two winner, claiming a 6-2 6-3 triumph over Miroslava Vavrinec.

Natalie Oremans returns to the Netherlands this morning never having been in it against No 12 seed Jennifer Capriati - the American running out a 6-0 6-2 winner.

Few problems too for Belgian 15th seed Kim Clijsters, who dispatched Adriana Jidkova 6-3 7-6.
