Humberside Police Authority in Britain today delayed making a decision on the future of its chief constable until the completion of legal proceedings.

Authority chairman Colin Inglis said his members had agreed by a majority of 15 votes to two to adjourn the issue of the suspension of David Westwood pending the outcome of legal proceedings beginning in the High Court today.

The authority had been told to suspend the chief constable by British Home Secretary David Blunkett following criticism of the Humberside Police force by the Bichard inquiry into the intelligence failings that allowed Soham killer Ian Huntley to be appointed as a school caretaker.
