Close to 7,000 people in the south-eastern Turkish town of Malatya needed hospital treatment in an outbreak of diarrhoea caused by drinking contaminated water, CNN-Turk television reported.

The outbreak was due to coliform bacteria found in two water depots that fed Malatya’s main water network, said Health Ministry director of general services Turan Buzgan.

The problematic depots were being chlorinated, Buzgan said.
