93% of junior doctors work extra hours

A new study is calling on the HSE to put support measures in place for junior doctors.

The survey carried out by the Medical Protection Society has found 93% of junior doctors worked above their contacted hours in their first year.

The company said a third are now questioning staying on in medicine as a result of their experiences, while four out of five are considering moving abroad because of working conditions in Ireland.

Dr Gordon McDavid, Medical Legal Adviser with MPS, said more needs to be done to help overworked interns.

"What we'd like to see happening now is an enhancement to those structures, and that those coming into junior doctor posts are well aware of where they can go for help," he said.

More then 75% of those who responded did say they enjoyed the first year, despite irregular hours, and an inability to eat regular meals or get a good night's sleep.
