Baltic King has reportedly come out of his recent victory at Beverley in grand shape and is likely to run in Saturday’s Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock - providing the going is not too soft.
Hughie Morrison’s six-year-old has enjoyed a profitable campaign so far and stayed on well to deny Pivotal’s Princess in the Listed Beverley Bullet on Sunday.
“He’s on target for the Sprint Cup and he’s come out of his last race okay, which is good news,” reported James Stafford, syndicate manager to owners Thurloe Thoroughbreds.
While Morrison’s charge was successful on good to soft going for the first time at the weekend, connections feel his chance would be compromised in the £300,000 dash if the ground were to ease any further.
“It all depends on the going really but as long as it doesn’t get too soft I think he’ll probably take his chance,” he explained.
“I don’t think it was desperately soft at Beverley – he doesn’t mind it good to soft but he wouldn’t want it too soft.”
Baltic King landed the Wokingham at Royal Ascot over six furlongs earlier in the year, and could take in the Diadem Stakes, run over the same course and distance on September 24, if forced to miss Saturday’s race.
“If he runs over five furlongs it has to be a stiff five – Beverley is one of the places where they do come back to you so it was an ideal track for him,” Stafford reasoned.
“If the going went wrong for him then he could go for the Diadem at Ascot - which is his track – so that is always up the sleeve if things don’t pan out for Saturday.”
